IS MY ROPE RIGHT OR LEFT HANDED?

An American-style bull rope CAN be used either left or right-handed.  But we DON'T recommend it!  It's important to make sure the rope you're using is laced properly for the hand you ride with.  The purpose of the leather lacing in a rope handle is to keep the handle from turning over and leaving you hanging out to dry.  When a rope handle turns over, your closed fingers are pinned between the bulls back and the palm of your hand.  The effect of this is that you cannot open your hand...and you're hung up.  We don't need to tell you how ugly a hang-up can get.  Click the picture to the left for the details.

So, how do I tell if my rope is a left or right?  It's easy.  Just put your hand in your rope with your little finger against the riser (on the block end of your handle).  Look at the angle of the wrinkles (creases) across your palm.  These wrinkles will be at approximately the same angle as the leather lacing in the rope handle.  The diagram shows a right hand in a right-handed rope.  Note the angle of the lacing goes to the right, just as the angle of the wrinkles in the palm of the hand.  Simple, right?
